The announcement of the IIFT entrance exam was done on Saturday, July 16, 2011 in the leading national dailies. IIFT entrance exam is the first MBA entrance exams of the seasons to be announced. Q: Adil Ahmad: Sir, I want to know if 4 months are sufficient to prepare for CAT if the student is average. If yes than how much time he should devote for cat preparation on per day basis?

A: Ideally you will require around six months. However, you still have good 4 months to give a crack at it. Suggest you take out about three to 4 hours every day for the CAT and have a disciplined preparation.

Q: Pooja: My query is related to Quant section. I have already covered most of the fundamental chapters but still my percentiles in mock tests are very low, around 15-20 which is very much depressing. Please suggest.

A: Firstly, put things in the right perspective. The mocks are to assess your progress so that you can understand what demands to be done. I do hope that you are doing thorough feedback after the mock so that you can pin-point the areas to work on. Am I able to solve all questions? What kind of mistakes am I making? Where is my issue – is it accuracy or is it speed? There is no need to get depressed. Keep fighting, your scores will improve

Q: Pooja: Please tell proper action plan for the remaining three months so that I can get a good grasp and hope for a 99+ score in main CAT. I’m working hard but not getting much result. I want to get through a prestigious college.

A: It depends on what stage of preparation you are currently in. I would assume that you would have completed most of the basics and have started taking the mocks. In the last leg, you must take mocks and then do a complete feedback on the test. You then need to work on what that feedback tells you. Then take the next mock. Please note that from now on, the preparation is to understand the areas of improvement and working on them.

Q: Nikhil: Sir Im going to take a scholarship test for a coaching institute where I would enroll for CAT preparation. Please give me some handy tips.

A: 1. Dont get stuck on any questions 2. Read instructions carefully

Q: Payel: What is the technique for preparing for the GK section?

A: The best strategy would be to read newspapers & magazines regularly. Also, have a look at past years questions of the test so that you get a common idea of the kind of questions that they ask. Mostly, it is common awareness. So long as you have good reading habits, you will not have much of a problem.

Q: Rahul: The usual dilemma that one faces while preparing for CAT takes the form of a trade off between accuracy and speed. Honestly, one need not trade off one for the other. How to combine both of them?

A: To me, accuracy is more important. 50 per cent accuracy also means 50 per cent of the time wasted. In a two hour test that is one hour. And with negative marking, things are even worse. Having said that, as you keep taking your mocks, your speed would also improve. Bottom-line, never compromise on accuracy.

Ronak: As I know GK has less weightage than Quant, how many questions are sufficient in GK?

A. Yes, GK has less weightage and in GK, either you know or you dont know. You dont have to spend much time in it. Attempt questions in GK which you are considerably confident of and that would suffice.
